Ice Energy offers utilities the first sustainable, cost-effective solution to permanently and reliably address the core problem facing today’s electric grid – thermally driven peak demand.
When put to work at a multi-Megawatt scale, our smart grid-enabled, distributed energy storage technology delivers grid-scale benefits and performance, enabling utilities to improve energy system efficiency and grid reliability, increase utilization of generating assets, lower costs and improve the environment.
Storing thermal energy off-peak, when electricity generation is cleaner, more efficient and less expensive, and delivering it on-peak, when and where it is needed most, Ice Energy represents a groundbreaking new sustainable energy solution equivalent to thousands of megawatts of clean peaking power for utilities.
Because distributed storage is located at the point of consumption, no new infrastructure is required to deploy MW’s of capacity at grid scale.
Storing power close to the load also relieves strain on the transmission and distribution infrastructure, reducing losses that come from delivering that power over congested and thermally limited lines on peak. Infrastructure congestion is mitigated, losses lowered, system efficiency increased, and power quality improved. Existing infrastructure can be extended to serve new load growth without upgrade, replacement or addition, eliminating the need for hundreds of millions of dollars of investment for a few hours each year.
When deployed, aggregated, and intelligently managed at scale, Ice Energy’s systems provide a single manageable utility-scale resource that can permanently reshape system load, feeder by feeder, at the substation level, or over an entire region.
The ability to aggregate and control the distributed units as a single utility resource enables the integrated resource planning group of a utility to evaluate the solution in much the same way as they evaluate new peaking generation, and provides significantly more incremental value across the entire value chain, from source generation to site consumption.
By enabling the reliable integration and increased penetration of clean renewable generation like wind, solar and geothermal, Ice Energy’s unique storage solution – itself a qualifying Renewable Portfolio Resource under some definitions and statutes – helps utilities to more easily, affordably, and reliably meet their renewable energy goals.
Distributed storage can be deployed quickly to balance other renewable resources, such as wind and solar, which are intermittent by nature and often out of sync with peak demand. Increasing the demand during off peak periods with storage increases the amount of renewable resources that can be reliably integrated onto the grid, effectively delivering a more balanced load profile.
It all adds up to a cost-effective, grid-scale solution that fundamentally changes how and when energy is consumed, to enable the more efficient use of energy system resources, and the transition to a cleaner, smarter, more sustainable power grid.
